TRAVELING TO THE EU IN 2025: WHAT IS ETIAS AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT TRAVELERS?

Implementation of the ETIAS System – Mandatory Requirement to Travel to the European Union

By Vanessa Casas

ETIAS, an evolution of migration policy and border security in Europe. We are writing to inform you about the implementation of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System(ETIAS), which will become mandatory in mid-2025. This system will affect all citizens of visa-exempt countries wishing to enter the Schengen Area of the European Union (EU).

You are probably wondering, What is it, How does it affect us, Requirements, Process, ETIAS is an electronic authorization system aimed at strengthening border security and managing travel to the EU more efficiently. All travelers coming from countries whose citizenship does not require a visa to enter the EU (Mexico, as an example) must obtain prior authorization, valid for a maximum of three years or until the expiration of the applicant’s passport, whichever comes first.

Who should apply?

ETIAS authorization will be mandatory for citizens of visa-exempt countries planning to travel to the EU for tourism, business or transit purposes. Travelers will be required to obtain ETIAS prior to their trip, even if they do not require a visa. The application process will be done electronically through the official ETIAS website; the form must be completed with personal data, travel information and security background.

There is an administrative cost involved in the application process. In most cases, the authorization will be approved instantly, although in exceptional situations it may take longer.

The validity of the ETIAS will be valid for multiple entries within the period of its validity (up to three years), allowing travelers to enter Schengen member countries without the need to apply for a new authorization for each trip.

The impact for travelers could be that the lack of a valid ETIAS authorization may result in airlines denying boarding or refusing entry at the EU border. It is therefore recommended that travelers apply at least 72 hours in advance of their travel date to avoid inconvenience.

Our recommendations are:

  1. Verify the validity of the passport, as it must be valid for at least three months from the date of entry into the EU, and
  2. (ii) Apply for ETIAS sufficiently in advance of the departure date to ensure approval.
