New NOM on personal protective equipment imposes greater obligations on employers

On March 28, 2008, NOM-017-STPS-2024 was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, replacing the 2008 version and entering into force on September 28, 2025. This standard establishes new guidelines for the selection, use and handling of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the workplace.

What changes and why is it important for employers?

The standard imposes stricter obligations on employers, such as conducting a documented risk analysis by job and area, identifying exposed anatomical regions, and determining the appropriate PPE according to the type and degree of risk. The equipment must be certified, compatible with other devices, and in optimal condition.

Employers must train personnel with a theoretical-practical approach prior to the start of activities and at least every two years. They must also have clear procedures (in language understandable to the worker) on the use, revision, maintenance, cleaning and final disposal of PPE.

It is required to signpost areas where the use of PPE is mandatory, supervise the effective wearing of PPE during the workday, and keep detailed records of delivery, maintenance and replacement, including name, signature and dates. The standard also extends these obligations to visitors and contractor workers who enter risk areas.

What do we recommend?

Review your risk diagnosis, update your procedures, and prepare your documentation for an eventual inspection. At Vega, Guerrero & Asociados we can assist you in the technical and documentary implementation of this new regulatory obligation.
