In recent days, the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) announced the official calendar of national discussion forums to build consensus on the reduction of working hours in Mexico.
The purpose of these forums is to generate a plural space to gather the positions and proposals of the different sectors involved, with a view to drafting an initiative to reform the Federal Labor Law.
Calendar and forum topics
The forums will be held between June 19 and July 7, 2025, with the following schedule:
- Mexico City: June 19
- Monterrey: June 23
- Guadalajara: June 26
- Tijuana: June 30
- Querétaro: July 3
- Cancun: July 7
Representatives from the federal and state governments, the labor sector, the business sector, academia andinternational organizations will participate.
Key topics to be addressed include:
- Productivity and wages
- Labor cost
- Gradual implementation
- International experiences in working hours
- Well-being at work
Critical path of the process
According to the announced schedule:
- The conclusions of the forums will be presented on July 14.
- The bill will be presented on July 31.
- The formal reform initiative would be presented to Congress on September 1, 2025.
Context of the legislative process
Although the reduction of the working day has been announced as a priority of the Executive, it is important to note that the reform has not yet been approved and is still in the consultation and analysis stage. It will be necessary to closely follow the development of the legislative process in the coming months.
